Why did I bring earphones to the office if they aren't going to convey the message that I am aurally occupied and therefore cannot respond to you talking at me from the back?

Or that it is not okay to impatiently tap me on the shoulder just to make small talk, for precisely the reason that I have an elastic band of music strapped over my head?
